LAST BUYER’S GROUP- GROUP B –MAY 28th at Bee Healthy–10:00 a.m.

Tuesday, tomorrow, is the last Buyer’s Group for the Season!  Bee Healthy, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Limited goodies for sale:  Fruit, Butternut and Spaghetti Squash, Garlic, Basil from Greybull Valley Produce, Cilantro, Ginger and Turmeric roots.

Unforeseen change in the Special Boxes for tomorrow, Group B, May 28th…We sent the asparagus back as it was gross and smelled like fisherman’s wharf…no offense to those that like the smell of Fisherman’s Wharf!  In the place of the asparagus are three mystery items…mystery because the boxes are mixed up and the choice is random.  We all love a mystery?–RIGHT?

An info sheet is included with each box, but it like the weather is a little off:  Wrong date and wrong group indicated…no asparagus but your mystery item instead…SAVE your recipe for Asparagus Leek Soup for that weekend trip along the ditches or canal banks hunting for your OWN wild-harvested Wyoming asparagus, or you can substitute potatoes in the place of the asparagus!

UPDATE ON THE FARM:  Plenty of openings in the CSA…we are harvesting the high tunnels and replanting Hakurei turnips and Red Radishes.  We just started harvesting Broccolini (Galion X) this week and had our first sampling tonight for dinner!  YUM!!  Before this latest bout with what acts like Pacific Northwest winter weather, we were able to get three beds of early cabbage transplanted into the garden and covered to protect it from this weird weather!  Hopefully later this week things will be dried enough that we can relocate the rest of the greenhouse occupants!  It has been a weird spring…but seldom do we have a normal one!  LOL

Stop in and visit tomorrow at Bee Healthy!  We are retreating to the farm for the next 6 weeks and will emerge again in JULY, ready to serve garden goodies and great Market Day’s every Thursday at The Farm!   The Farmer’s Wife

May 13th- Group B Special Boxes AND a Soapbox Speech on Nutrition…

red radishes

The goodies for the Monday  Special Boxes have been ordered…I’ll update on Saturday with a confirmation of what is received! In addition to the ORDERED goods, we will have our fresh harvested SPINACH and Red Rover RADISHES!

So here’s the situation this time of year: quality on produce is sketchy–avocados, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, strawberries were all poor last week.  The variety of items I can order confidently is shrinking!  We are between ‘seasons’–The winter goods out of Mexico have peaked.  The good stuff now is domestic, and just coming into it’s own…like Washington Asparagus! And like Worland  Spinach and Red Radishes, from Lloyd Craft Farms!  The Special Box focus is always on freshness, variety, and nutrition, so we are looking closer to home and excited our high tunnels are now producing!

Box CONTENTS:   Fruit-heavy with ORG Washington Fuji Apples, California Heirloom Oranges, Texas Grapefruit, ORG Blueberries (domestic)…ORG Mixed Fingerlings (Canada), ORG Jumbo Yellow Onion…our own ziplock bag of Spinach (about 4 oz) and a bundle of Red Radishes, and Greybull Valley Produce Butter Head Lettuce$30     (INFO Sheet with Recipes and Nutritional Information)

Why do we lean organic?  (Soapbox Speech…)

  1. Lower levels of pesticide/herbicide chemicals (hormone disrupters and toxic),
  2. Higher levels of vitamins and minerals,
  3. BUT needs to be fresh and vital for the best nutrient content and HEALTH.  (Conventional fresh may be better than organic degraded…which is the most alive!)

The biggest problem with conventional, in my opinion, is we have not fed the soil and its microbes;  Simply put, the bugs are not there to break the soil down so the living plants can take it up.  With lower levels of vitamins and minerals in the plant tissue, plants become deficient and more susceptible to disease and pest attacks. The conventional solution has been more chemicals to counter those problems, and we are in a vicious cycle with an explosion of autoimmune illnesses which some doctors feel are related to lack of minerals at the very root.  Our journey with the garden has been to learn how to feed our soil, and raise healthy plants that can ward off their own problems.  We try to feed the soil, that feeds the plant, that feeds us!  The Adventure goes on !

BTW–the same principle applies to our gut biome…healthy microbes to build the immune system and improve the functioning of the digestive tract.  Healthy GI, better absorption, less deficiencies and illnesses.  Another reason to incorporate fresh, nutrient packed fruits and vegetables into your American diet.  AND grass feed beef and free range chickens!  Let’s CHANGE the American diet from FAST to FRESH–

CSA Members or Wanna-be’s–

lloyd and high tunnel

Picture of The Farmer and the Gothic High Tunnel that was completed in 2017.

We currently have 41 Worland folks signed up for the CSA.  There is room for more–but do not tarry!  We are getting a lot of interest from other Wyomingites who don’t live in the Big Horn Basin, the Breadbasket of Wyoming.  Here we have the perfect biome for growing stuff–not too much rain, not too much wind, just the right amount of sun!  The Garden is limited to 125 Share units and we are nearing 100!

Here’s the deal:  Sign up by tomorrow midnight (Sunday, May 5th) and take advantage of the Early Bird Voucher when paid in full by May 10th.  (That is an extension of 5 days to pay in full!)  If you aren’t sure whether a Weekly or Leap-Frog would work best for your needs, then sign up for the Leap-Frog ($200);  You can upgrade to the Weekly before August 15th.  At least you would get the $10 Voucher to use in The Store on Thursday’s at CSA Pick UP in July!

The high tunnels are fully planted and harvest is beginning:  Red Radishes yesterday, and Spinach next week.  (Both will be in the Buyer’s Group Special Boxes…Red Radishes for Group A this week, and both for Group B next week.)

Hoping to do a Spring video later this week so you can see what it all looks like:  The greenhouse loaded with plants to set out, the high tunnels loaded with plant growing for harvest through June, and the progress on the garden.  You’ll see we have a huge fence project to accomplish before the garden is totally in, and you’ll see the work done so far on the new Green House!  All in the interest, no more like passion, of bringing you good healthy food!  Healthy foods for Healthy bodies for Healthy communities!  (I think Rodale said that first, but I’ve said it second–)

The Farmer’s Wife!
