Most likely a Whitetailed deer. They will stomp pumpkins – they love pumpkins. It probably just tested a few watermelons. Hence the hole that looks like a rake handle.
Years ago we had deer that devastated the cantaloupe patch, just as you say! But these melons were damaged by striped bandits with very dexterous fingers: raccoons…and not just one but a party of a half dozen.
