Brussels sprouts– What do I do with THEM?!

FOUR MORE BOXES LEFT!  LAST DAY TO RESERVE THEM FOR DELIVERY TO BEE HEALTHY ON FRIDAY–COST THIS WEEK IS $20/ $25 VALUE–

Brussels sprouts are a Brassica–same family as broccoli and cauliflower…cabbage and kale–and all of them are high in cancer-fighting anti-oxidants!  Brussels sprouts are like baby cabbages on a stick.

I NEVER liked Brussels sprouts growing up—my dad was the cook in our family and his specialties were pancakes with corn (in the batter), and hot dogs…he like fried potatoes, too!  (That must be where I get my love of spuds–)  The only Brussels sprouts we had were from the store’s freezer section—those are tough and nasty and smell bad when cooking!  Fresh Brussels sprouts (like ours), on the other hand, are tender and full of flavor.

There are lots of recipes on the internet, but I find my favorite goes like this:

  • cut the sprouts in half so they can cook more thoroughly, cover them half way up the sprout with water in a cast iron skillet–no more than an inch deep.  Bring them to a boil and then reduce the heat and simmer until the water is cooked away. At this point they are almost ready to eat–
  • add olive oil (about a tablespoon or two) and salt and pepper.  Cook them another 5-15 minutes until browned.  (You may need to turn the heat up–) When they are fork tender (but not mushy), I put them into a bowl to serve.
  • To switch it up, add a little balsamic vinegar (about a tablespoon or two) and dried cranberries, OR slivered almonds slightly roasted in the oven or cooked in the skillet with the sprouts the last couple of minutes.

2# of Cosmic Carrots–very sweet and tender, larger size suitable for wafer snacks, grated for salads, cooked or steamed, and the best juice!

Deadon Savoy cabbage–smaller heads, beautiful color with green and red, wonderfully sweet when fried or steamed…I like cabbage cooked with onions, garlic, and bacon!  Deadon is my family’s favorite cabbage for those fried dishes–

Kale–bagged and not bundled this week…small tender leaves…4 oz. total weight.

Sierra Blanca onions— 2 colossal size white…great cooked and suitable for onion rings…mild enough to eat raw–

Brussels sprouts-– 1# bag–fresher than the store and a larger size bag, too. Ours is organically raised…

Celery Stalks— 1-1/2# bag with some greens, too.

Yukon Gem potatoes– 3# bag…freshly dug, roundish and more uniform sizing…GREAT FLAVOR!

Carnival Squash, unless you request Acorn, Honey Bear Acorn, Green Kabocha, Thelma Sanders Sweet Potato Squash (blonde acorn), Red Kuri, or Butternut

Our goal is to provide as fresh of veggies as we can for our community!–spread the word and help us move the nutrition:  get it from our coolers into healthy bodies!!

The Farmer’s Wife–

Special Boxes–6 Left–Pick Up Friday, December 2nd

We are packing the boxes tomorrow for delivery Friday to Bee Healthy–6 left!  Adding a bag of Broccoli–last of the SEASON but still tender and sweet!

Great quality and flavor on the veggies:  purple cauliflower and carrots, Rose Finn Apple fingerling potatoes, red kale and onions, 1# of Brussels sprouts, a celeriac (celery root), and a creamy colored and creamy textured Hidatsa squash!

Hidatsa is great baked in the office or cooked down for pumpkin-type pie…steam the cauliflower, roast the carrots, and boil the fingerlings and coat with a simple butter sauce…boil and roast the Brussels sprouts in the cast iron skillet with olive oil and salt and pepper…celeriac is a strong but mild celery flavor for your favorite chicken noodle soup.  And BROCCOLI makes my mouth water!! $25.00, pay at pick up–check or cash.

text to 431-1219, or email craftterri@rtconnect.net–Thursday is the last day to reserve your box of local veggies from Lloyd Craft Farms–   🙂
