Week 13 Share– Potatofest

What a week!  Too wet to dig potatoes this week, and too cold to think about it for tomorrow…………so here’s what the deal is:  A POTATOFEST! from the multitude of potatoes stocked up in the cooler–

Saturday at Pick-Up’s you will have your choice between several varieties of Fingerlings, and Standard potatoes.  We bagged 441 pounds of potatoes today that have been dug over the past four weeks and put them into 3# bags.  At Pick Up the different varieties will be labeled–quantities are limited within each variety so it is first come, first choice.

A note on the different types:

Fingerlings are small, long and slender or chubby stubby shaped tubers; Best roasted or boiled.  We have Austrian Crescent (yellow skin and meat, curved shape), Red Thumb (red skin and meat, chubby), Amarosa (lighter red skin and rosy colored meat, skinnier), and Apple Rose Fin (light blush colored skin and rosy meat, long and skinny, or baby sized).

Standard Potatoes are Yukon Gold, Dark Red Norland, and Purple Viking.  We also have some monster potatoes bagged–3 to 4 to a bag.

It has not been a great year for potatoes–blight and scab.  You will want to get through these potatoes in a week to ten days–they are not good for storage.  Keep potatoes in a dark place to prevent them from turning green.  They are a night-shade and the green part can be toxic, so trim any green off.  Some people are more sensitive than others.

We hope to harvest the Russets, rest of the Red Norlands, the Peanut Fingerlings, and the last of the Yukon’s next week.

Other share items are Scarlet Queen Turnips or Alpine Daikon Radishes, Green Bell peppers, Patterson onions, Acorn Squash, and Brussels spouts!  Pick up will be set up the same as at The Farm:  Fill your own share following the directions on the table. Measure out the Brussels sprouts and pour them into a bag with a twisty tie. Check out the recipe for Brussels sprouts chips

We hope to have the Extra’s table, too–Additional peppers, broccoli, hot peppers, celery stalks, snack peppers, and maybe some tomatoes

See you Saturday from 9:00 to 11:30 at the corner of Robertson and 9th–  🙂
