FRUIT SHARE PEOPLE

This is a shout out to the Fruit Share members– I need to hear from you before I order next Monday.

Two questions:

Are you firm on Organic only?  My preference is Organic only, but we are early in the season and I’m looking at the available organic fruit and not that many items are listed in the Organic section–imported Apples, Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, Citrus and Peaches and Pears which are all out of season, and the tropicals (mango, pineapple, bananas, coconuts, kiwi).  If I were to order today the Fruit Share would be 4# imported Fuji apples and two 4.4 oz containers of Blueberries.  The new list doesn’t have organic Pink Lady, they did last week, but I can get Pink Lady apples (non-organic and waxed) for $1.50/lb.  Should I buy the non-organic until more of the organic comes into season and we have more choice?  OR should I stick with Organic, knowing the choices are narrower for the time being?

We can get organic avocados and bananas at Blair’s.  The quality of the avocados has slid and the price is up to $2.  The bananas have been good and run 99 cents/lb.  I can get avocados for half the price (not sure on the quality without talking to the sales rep) and bananas for 68 cents/lb.  Do you want me to order them for the price savings, or skip them since we can get them locally?

Two things to keep in mind–

Even organic fruit is sprayed before it is brought to the packing facility to prevent the spread of fruit pests and diseases.  Organic means it is organically grown in the orchard or field–according to the guidelines of the USDA, but once out of the field it has to comply with conventional practices of packing, shipping, and distribution.  (Always wash your fruit!)

We can not be assured of the organic practices of countries outside the US.  I don’t believe we personally inspect their operations, but trust in their word.  Some say that the standards of other countries do not equal the standards in the US–I don’t have enough information.  I like to buy local when I can, but our southern neighbors can grow things when we can’t.  Do we eat what we have here and wait for the cycles of our region?–we know the best fruit is the fruit in season…and the best price, too.

Give me your thoughts–The Farmer’s Wife

I’m not picky. Whatever you think would be best and taste best.

Terri Such a tough decision anymore but here goes my thoughts about the fruit share. I (highly) prefer organic for the fruits that are usually eaten whole-peel and all- especially apples and berries, reported as heavily sprayed. Non organic is ok with fruits that need peeled. I am hoping for no bananas as they are so easily bought here and cheap but if they come in the share I will certainly enjoy them. BTW: if you would have had to order the other day and only get the fuji’s and blueberries, as in your email, I would have been good with that….organic apples are ridiculously expensive lately!

    Thanks for asking 🙂 Kim

Hello Terri, For what it’s worth, here is my own two-cents… For apples I would definitely prefer organic for many reasons, however, I think that you should get whatever you can get. I realize that it is probably frustrating trying to make everyone happy. I think it all depends on where the fruit comes from. A lot of times, produce will come from places that are not “certified organic” (like Lloyd Craft Farms for example), but it is pretty much as good or better than those that are certified. I know you know this and I trust your judgment. Katy

Hi Teri, I always wash my fruit so I don’t have to have organic. As far as bananas go I’ve had them for many regions I Iike them all. I just LOVE fruit. I’m so excited to get my first fruit share. Donette

Hi Terri, Some fruit I would prefer organic only, such as, strawberries and blueberries. Other fruit I would be fine with non organic, such as, apples…I can peel. I would love to have organic bananas and avocados. Use your best judgment! Thanks, Rebecca

  10. USDA AND FDA ppppppfffff! Rules guidelines control control control.

    I love avocados.

I wash all my veggies with the Kangen so feel a little safer there.

I buy bananas at Blair’s always. Save yourself the trouble of looking for those.

    My two cents

Am I a fruit share holder?? I wanna be!!

Organic is good but is fine with me if its not all organic all the time. I’ve been told strawberries and the like are the most important to be organic because it absorbs the sprays more..which I’m sure you knew. Whatever you decide will be fine with us.

  12. Terry,

We want to support organic farmers..especially those in the states…but not at the expense of quality. Inedible fruit is inedible fruit regardless of how it is grown. We’ll support your decision as we feel you have our best interest at heart.

I think you should buy non-organic until organic comes into season so you have a good selection of fruit. Hope that helps. Donna Harrington

I don’t have to have organic for everything if the produce is good. As far as bananas and avocados I can get them at Blairs if the price is the same. If you still need people to pick up on Saturdays I can pick mine up then if it helps you out.

    Thanks, Katie Dunham

I’m fine with non organic fruit. I would prefer me variety than only organic.
